Independence Hall in Philadelphia is where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were debated and adopted. It was completed in 1753 and originally served as the Pennsylvania State House. The Liberty Bell was originally housed in its bell tower. George Washington was appointed commander of the Continental Army here in 1775. The Assembly Room has been restored to look as it did in the 18th century. It’s one of the most iconic symbols of American democracy. Independence Hall was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
