Cool facts about Devils Tower
It was proclaimed the first U.S. national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.
The tower’s walls are made of remarkably regular polygonal columns formed as magma cooled and contracted.
Multiple Indigenous names exist; a common Lakota name translates to “Bear Lodge,” reflecting cultural stories.
The Tower Trail lets you circle the base and stare straight up at 800+ feet of vertical rock.
June features a voluntary climbing pause out of respect for tribal ceremonies held at the site.
Prairie dog towns near the entrance offer lively wildlife viewing—and lots of squeaks.
The monument’s silhouette famously appeared in the film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
Despite the common misconception, the formation is nowhere near Yellowstone—and is worthy of its own trip.
