Lake Tahoe was formed about 2 million years ago during the Ice Age. It is a natural lake created by both geological faulting and glacial activity. The surrounding mountains were shaped by tectonic forces and volcanic activity. Over time, snowmelt and rainfall filled the basin to create the lake. Its remarkable clarity is due to minimal sediment inflow and careful environmental protection. Lake Tahoe’s formation is an example of the complex interplay of natural geological processes.
