When was Stanford University founded?

Stanford University was founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their only son, Leland Stanford Jr., who had died of typhoid at the age of 15. The university officially opened its doors to students in 1891. The Stanfords wanted to create a place of higher learning that would serve both men and women, which was uncommon for that era. Since then, the school has grown into one of the world’s leading research universities. Its founding philosophy emphasized public service, innovation, and accessibility.
