Why was the name changed from Sears Tower to Willis Tower?

The tower was originally named Sears Tower after the Sears, Roebuck & Co. company, which commissioned its construction in the late 1960s. In 2009, the global insurance broker Willis Group Holdings acquired the naming rights as part of a lease agreement. Although many locals still affectionately call it the Sears Tower, its official name remains Willis Tower. The renaming sparked debates among Chicagoans, but the building’s iconic status has never changed. It continues to be a defining part of the city.
