Newark Airport first opened in 1928, making it one of the oldest commercial airports in the United States. At its opening, it was the busiest airport in the nation. It has since undergone multiple expansions and modernizations to accommodate growing demand. In 2002, the airport was renamed Newark Liberty International Airport to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks. Today, it continues to play a vital role in American aviation history.
