Construction of The Gherkin began in 2001 and was completed in 2003. The building was officially opened in April 2004. Designed by Norman Foster and the architectural firm Foster + Partners, it quickly gained international attention for its innovative design. The Gherkin replaced the outdated Baltic Exchange building, which had been damaged in a bomb attack in 1992. Since its completion, it has been a celebrated example of contemporary architecture.
