Is Grand Canyon University a for-profit school?

GCU was originally founded as a non-profit Christian university in 1949, later operated as a for-profit institution for several years, and has since returned to a non-profit structure. This transition was made official in 2018 when the Higher Learning Commission approved GCU’s request to operate once again as a non-profit. Today, it continues to function as a private Christian university with a strong mission of service and community impact. The non-profit status supports GCU’s educational focus rather than profit generation. This change has been welcomed by both students and alumni.
