Can you see bison and other wildlife safely — what precautions should visitors take?

Yes, Custer State Park is one of the best places to see wild bison, pronghorn, mule deer, elk, and a variety of birds, often from the roadside or designated pullouts. Always view wildlife from a safe distance: bison and other animals are unpredictable and can run faster than they look, so remain inside your vehicle when near large animals. Follow posted speed limits and stay on marked roads to avoid disturbing habitats or causing accidents. Never feed wildlife — feeding changes animal behavior and can be dangerous for both animals and people. Binoculars and a zoom lens are recommended for close-up views without approaching the animals.
