How large and deep is Great Slave Lake?

Great Slave Lake is one of the largest lakes in Canada and the deepest lake in North America, reaching depths over 600 meters in places. Its expansive surface area makes it a dominant geographic feature of the Northwest Territories and affects local climate and transportation patterns. The lake is irregularly shaped with numerous bays, islands, and long peninsulas that create varied shorelines and sheltered fishing spots. Because of the depth and volume, the lake stores a huge amount of cold water and takes a long time to warm in summer or fully freeze and thaw in winter. These characteristics influence ice formation, boating seasons, and habitat for fish and other wildlife.
