Lake Toba was created by a supervolcanic eruption that occurred around 74,000 years ago. The eruption expelled vast amounts of magma, leaving behind a large caldera that eventually filled with water to form the lake. This eruption was one of the most powerful volcanic events in human history, significantly affecting global climate and ecosystems. The caldera measures about 100 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide, making it exceptionally large. Today, the lake and surrounding land are volcanic in origin, with fertile soils that support agriculture and local communities.
