What is the history of Battery Park?

Battery Park gets its name from the artillery batteries that protected New York Harbor in the late 1600s. Over the centuries, it has transformed from a defensive stronghold into a cultural and recreational landmark. Castle Clinton, built in 1811, is one of the park’s most important historical structures, having served as a fort, immigration station, and entertainment venue. The area has also been a hub for immigrants arriving in the United States during the 19th century. Today, Battery Park preserves this rich heritage while serving as a welcoming green space for millions of visitors.
