The name “Alhambra” comes from Arabic and means “the red one,” inspired by the color of its walls at sunset.
The Alhambra started as a small fortress in the 9th century before becoming a royal palace centuries later.
Its walls are decorated with over 10,000 Arabic inscriptions, many of which are poems and blessings.
The Generalife gardens were designed as a retreat for the royals, with fountains symbolizing paradise.
Washington Irving’s book “Tales of the Alhambra” helped bring global attention to the site in the 19th century.
