China Slams Canadian and Australian Warship Transit Through Taiwan Strait

China’s military strongly criticized the joint transit of Canadian and Australian warships through the Taiwan Strait, accusing them of escalating regional tensions by sending “wrong signals.” The Australian Defense Department defended the move, stating it complied fully with international law and reaffirming commitment to freedom of navigation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Canada confirmed that HMCS Ville de Québec was acting under Operation Horizon to bolster Indo-Pacific peace and stability. Taiwan’s defense ministry noted increased vigilance but reiterated that such passages are routine in international waters. Observers see the incident as a reminder of ongoing strategic friction in the region.
