Mandarin (in traditional characters) is the official language, and most locals speak it fluently. But hear this—around 70% also know Taiwanese Hokkien, and Hakka or indigenous languages pop up too. English is taught in schools and should get you by in tourist areas and on signs. Friendly tip: learning a few Mandarin phrases like “xiè xie” (thank you) goes a long way. Locals always appreciate the effort, and it opens more doors (and smiles).
