Kentucky’s Athletic Director Backs SCORE Act to Reform College Sports

University of Kentucky Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart is making waves by publicly supporting the SCORE Act—a proposed bill aimed at formalizing Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights, revenue sharing, and protections for college athletes. Among its features are guarantees for scholarships, medical care, mental health support, and assistance completing degrees—issues that have divided college sports stakeholders for years. Barnhart emphasized that the bill preserves athletes’ status as students (not employees), a distinction many see as crucial for maintaining Title IX protections and Olympic eligibility. The legislation could reach a vote in the U.S. House soon, making Barnhart’s endorsement especially timely. If passed, it could reshape the business and power structure in collegiate athletics across the country. For many universities and athletes, the SCORE Act represents a potential turning point in fairness and governance.
