Schumer Leaves Door Open for Clean Funding Bill to Avoid Government Shutdown

With the federal government shutdown deadline looming at September 30, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer refused to rule out agreeing to a “clean” continuing resolution, even though Democrats have pressed for policy provisions in any stopgap funding legislation. Republicans are pushing for a funding bill without amendments, while Democrats want commitments around healthcare funding, ACA subsidies, and limits on discretionary funding cuts. So far, Congressional negotiations remain stalled, with both sides accusing the other of bad faith. Schumer emphasized that the public supports Democratic priorities, but expressed concern that failure to reach any agreement could lead to severe disruption across federal services. Time is running short, and the outcome could hinge on whether leaders are willing to compromise or double down.
