Lake Okeechobee, often called "The Big O," is Florida's largest freshwater lake, covering about 730 square miles. It's the eighth-largest natural freshwater lake in the U.S. and the second-largest entirely within the contiguous 48 states, after Lake Michigan. Despite its size, it's relatively shallow, with an average depth of only 9 feet. The lake serves as a crucial water source for the region and is central to South Florida's ecosystem.
