Paraguay is relatively safe and welcoming, though it receives fewer tourists than its neighbors. Petty theft can happen in crowded places, especially in Asunción. Violent crime is rare for visitors who stay in well-traveled areas. Roads and lighting can be poor in rural regions, so night travel is best avoided. Locals are friendly and helpful to travelers. Protests occur occasionally but are usually peaceful. Overall, Paraguay is a safe and relaxed country when visited with normal travel precautions.
