Liberia is known for being Africa’s first republic and for its strong historical ties to the United States. Monrovia, the capital, sits on the Atlantic coast with beaches, markets, and a lively urban scene. The country’s rainforests are home to rare wildlife, including pygmy hippos and colorful birdlife. Surfing has become a surprising draw thanks to long, uncrowded waves along the coast. Liberian culture features energetic music, storytelling, and flavorful dishes like jollof rice and cassava-based meals. Rubber production and natural resources play a big role in the economy. National parks like Sapo protect some of West Africa’s most untouched wilderness. Despite past struggles, Liberia is rebuilding with resilience and a warm, welcoming spirit.
