Charlie Chaplin was a British-born actor, director and composer who helped invent modern film comedy. He became a global superstar in the silent era with his little tramp character — a baggy suit, bowler hat and tiny mustache that everyone recognised. Chaplin mixed slapstick with real emotion, so people laughed and also felt something deeper. He wrote and directed many of his own movies, which was rare and made his work personal and consistent. Even after talkies arrived, his films kept drawing crowds because of their heart and craft. Today filmmakers and fans still study his timing, staging and storytelling. His image and influence are everywhere in movie history books and pop culture.
