Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, a quiet market town in England. His father, John Shakespeare, was a glove maker and local politician. His mother, Mary Arden, came from a farming family with some wealth. William attended the local grammar school, where he studied Latin, rhetoric, and classical texts. There’s no evidence he went to university, so most of his education came from school and real life. Not much is known about his teenage years, which historians often call his “lost years.” Those gaps make him even more mysterious and interesting to people today.
