In Argentina, Christmas centres around family gatherings and a big feast on Christmas Eve, often extending into the early hours of Christmas Day. Traditional meals include roasted meats, salads, pan dulce and turrón, and fireworks are widely used to welcome Christmas at midnight. Families decorate Christmas trees and nativity scenes, and Midnight Mass is attended by many. A unique custom in some areas is launching lit paper lanterns (“globos”) into the night sky after the feast. Warm weather and summer celebrations influence outdoor gatherings, barbecues and long evening festivities. Gift exchanges typically happen late on Christmas Eve or immediately after midnight. Throughout Argentina, Christmas blends Catholic devotion, rich culinary traditions and vibrant family celebrations.
