In Brazil, Christmas is celebrated in the middle of summer, with families gathering on Christmas Eve for a late dinner and gift exchange at midnight. Santa Claus — known as Papai Noel — brings gifts, and many families include fireworks in the celebration after Midnight Mass. A popular festive event is Natal Luz (“Christmas of Lights”) in Gramado, a large festival of lights, shows and parades that runs through much of the holiday season. Traditional foods include roast turkey, pork, salads and panettone, and many Brazilians also enjoy beach gatherings and barbecues due to the warm weather. Decorations and lights fill homes, malls and town squares throughout December. The holiday blends Catholic traditions with lively seasonal events and family‑centred feasts under summery skies.
