In Spain, Christmas celebrations begin with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December and extend through Epiphany on 6 January. Many families display detailed nativity scenes called “belenes” in homes and churches and participate in Christmas Eve (Nochebuena) dinners with family before attending “La Misa del Gallo” (Midnight Mass). A national tradition on 22 December is the Christmas lottery “El Gordo,” a festive event watched by millions. Children often receive gifts not just on Christmas Day but on Three Kings’ Day (Día de los Reyes), when colourful parades featuring the Wise Men distribute sweets. In Catalonia, families celebrate with the quirky “Caga Tió,” a log that is “fed” in December and then “pooped” with gifts and sweets on Christmas Eve. Christmas lights, markets and communal feasts continue through December and into early January. The season blends Catholic observance with family, community events and unique regional customs.
