In The Bahamas, Christmas is both religious and festive, with one of the most iconic traditions being Junkanoo, a vibrant street parade held on Boxing Day (December 26) and New Year’s Day. Junkanoo celebrations feature elaborate costumes, rhythmic drumming, dancing and colourful displays that fill the streets with energy and creativity. Families also decorate homes and attend church services, especially on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Traditional gatherings include festive meals with roast meats, side dishes and local desserts enjoyed with friends and relatives. Music and community gatherings are central, reinforcing social bonds during the holiday season. Christmas lights and decorations adorn homes and public spaces throughout December. The festive atmosphere combines African heritage, local music and community celebrations in a uniquely Bahamian way.
