In Venezuela, Christmas is a festive and musical season that culminates in Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) with family gatherings, Midnight Mass and a big festive meal. A unique custom in many cities, especially Caracas, is closing roads early on Christmas morning so children and adults can skate or rollerblade to early Mass without traffic. The Christmas season also includes fireworks, parrandas (musical street caroling), and a strong focus on traditional foods. Hallacas — corn dough parcels filled with meats and wrapped in plantain leaves — and pan de jamón (ham bread) are central to holiday feasts. The Novena of Aguinaldos is also observed, with nightly gatherings for prayer, carols and shared food in the days leading up to Christmas. Decorations include Christmas trees and elaborate nativity scenes in homes and public spaces. Venezuela’s Christmas blends lively street traditions with family and religious rituals.
