How do they celebrate Orthodox Christmas in Serbia?

In Serbia, Christmas — called Božić — is celebrated on 7 January with rich Orthodox rituals and ancient customs tied to family and faith. The Christmas period begins on 6 January (Badnjak / Christmas Eve) with the ceremonial burning or symbolic display of the badnjak, an oak log representing warmth, life and Christ’s light. Families gather for a meatless supper with traditional dishes and prayers before midnight. On Christmas morning, solemn liturgies are held in churches, after which people return home for festive feasts with meat dishes and shared joy. Carol singing and community blessings continue throughout the day, and children may participate in traditional performances such as vertep. Christmas celebrations in Serbia often extend for several days, weaving together worship, folklore and family gatherings. The focus is on spiritual reflection, hospitality and communal warmth.
