In Ukraine, many Orthodox Christians traditionally celebrate Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, though the country also recognises 25 December in some communities. On 6 January (Christmas Eve), families gather for a special supper with 12 meatless dishes honouring the Twelve Apostles, with kutia — sweet wheat with honey and poppy seeds — at the centre of the table. Carol singing (kolyadka) and vertep performances — nativity plays with the “Star of Bethlehem” — are common in villages and cities alike. Midnight and Christmas Day liturgies are held in churches across the country, drawing worshippers to celebrate the Nativity of Christ. After services, families return home to share hearty meals with meat dishes, pastries and homemade spirits.
