Why does Santa Claus wear a red suit?

Santa Claus did not always wear red. Early images showed him in many different colors. The red suit became popular in the 1800s. Illustrations and advertisements helped fix the look. Red was seen as warm and cheerful. The color also stood out during winter scenes. Over time, the red suit became standard. Today it is one of Santa’s most recognizable features.
