At least 35 people have been killed and over 1,200 detained in Iran amid protests that have been ongoing for over a week, according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).
According to HRANA, the dead include 29 protesters, four children, and two security personnel. The protests reportedly spread to over 250 locations in 88 cities and 27 of the country's 31 provinces.
The Iranian Fars news agency reported casualties among security forces: approximately 250 police officers and 45 members of the Basij militia were wounded.
On January 2, US President Donald Trump published a statement on his social media platform, TruthSocial: "If Iran shoots and brutally kills peaceful protesters, as they do, the United States of America will come to our aid. We are fully prepared and ready to act." Trump's post does not specify what actions the US government is prepared to take against Iran.
Some Israeli politicians have made public statements on this matter, declaring the need to overthrow the ayatollah regime.
