The official capital of Guadeloupe is Basse‑Terre, located on the western side of the archipelago on the island of the same name. Basse‑Terre is the seat of government and home to administrative institutions. Although Basse‑Terre is the capital, the largest city and economic hub is Pointe‑à‑Pitre, found on the flatter island of Grande‑Terre. Pointe‑à‑Pitre is the centre of commerce, transport and urban life for most residents. The urban areas around Pointe‑à‑Pitre also include important towns such as Les Abymes and Le Gosier. Many travellers use Pointe‑à‑Pitre as a base for exploring the islands due to its port, airport and amenities. The mixture of historic sites and modern infrastructure makes these cities interesting places to visit.
