The site of Trafalgar Square was originally occupied by the King’s Mews and other buildings before being redeveloped in the early 19th century. It was designed by John Nash and Sir Charles Barry and opened as a public square in 1844. The square commemorates the British victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson’s Column was erected shortly afterward to honor Admiral Horatio Nelson. Over the years, it has become a symbol of national pride and civic engagement. Renovations and pedestrian improvements have enhanced accessibility and usability. Today, Trafalgar Square is both a historical landmark and a lively public space for residents and visitors.
