Downing Street itself is not open to the general public due to security concerns and its role as an active government location. Barriers and gates block direct pedestrian access to the street outside official business hours, with security personnel controlling entry. In the past, parts of the street were more accessible, and visitors could walk closer to the famous black door at Number 10, but this is no longer the case. Photograph opportunities are usually from outside the barriers along Whitehall where security allows. While you cannot enter Downing Street buildings as a tourist, occasional public events and organised tours occasionally include nearby government and historical sites around Westminster. Fans of British politics often combine a viewing stop at Downing Street with visits to the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Planned public garden openings and London Open Gardens Weekend events have occasionally allowed limited access to government gardens.
