What is Mount Lewotolo?

Mount Lewotolo, also known locally as Ile Lewotolok, is an active stratovolcano on Lembata Island in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. It’s part of the big chain of volcanoes in Indonesia formed by the Sunda Arc, which is linked to the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” The volcano rises about 1,455 meters above sea level and has a large crater at its summit. It’s famous among locals and visitors alike because it’s active and can erupt with ash and smoke. Scientists and the Indonesian Geological Agency keep a close watch on it because its activity levels can change quickly. Because it’s active, safety advisories often warn people and tourists to stay clear of certain areas. Its location on a less touristy island gives it a wild, natural vibe compared to more famous volcano spots.
