When did real humans first appear on Earth?

Posted on Oct 21, 2024 / Nature

The earliest known anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) appeared in Africa around 300,000 years ago.

However, the history of humanity is much longer and more complex than that. Humans are part of the larger group of primates, which also includes apes and monkeys. The earliest primates appeared on Earth around 55 million years ago.

The genus Homo, to which modern humans belong, first appeared around 2.8 million years ago. The Homo genus includes several species of early humans, such as Homo habilis, Homo erectus, and Homo neanderthalensis. These species coexisted with each other and with other human-like species at different times in history.

It's worth noting that the concept of "human" is complex and can be difficult to define. Some scientists consider certain early human-like species, such as Homo habilis and Homo erectus, to be human, while others do not. The concept of what constitutes a "human" has changed over time and is still being debated by scientists and scholars today. Regenerate response
