This well known county is named after Stephen Arnold Douglas (1813-61), an Illinois Democratic Congressman who ran against Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 United States presidential election and lost. The county seat of Douglas County is Douglasville. The county's area is about 199 square miles. Established in 1870, today Douglas County is home to 146 thousand residents.
