McDowell County is located in the western part of North Carolina. The county is named after Joseph McDowell (1756-1801), a soldier in the American Revolutionary War who took part in the Battle of Kings Mountain. The county seat of McDowell County is Marion. The county's area exceeds 446 square miles. Founded in 1842 from Burke County and Rutherford County, today McDowell County counts over 45 thousand inhabitants.
