Pitt County is situated in the eastern central zone of North Carolina. The county is named after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham (1708-1778), Secretary of State during the French and Indian War. The area of Pitt County is about 655 square miles. The county was formed in 1760 from Beaufort County, and it is populated today by 172 thousand residents.
