Richmond County is situated in the southern portion of North Carolina. The county is named after Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond (1735-1806), a firm supporter of the American colonists and advocated removal of British troops. The area of Richmond County is about 480 square miles. The county was established in 1779 from Anson County, and it is populated today by 43 thousand residents.
