The New Zealand Navy has lost its first ship since World War II.

On October 6, the specialized vessel Manawanui, designed for diving and hydrographic research, hit a reef off the coast of Upolu Island.

There were 75 people on board the Manawanui. People were successfully evacuated, but the ship sank. According to The Guardian, there is also a significant amount of diesel fuel on board the Manawanui, lying at the bottom at a depth of 35 meters, which now needs to be removed to prevent environmental pollution. About 200 thousand liters of fuel have already leaked into the ocean.
