Seven countries of NATO oppose an immediate invitation to Ukraine, unnamed officials and diplomats say.
The key opponents of the invitation are the United States and Germany. Earlier, officials in these countries, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, publicly stated that they oppose it.
Hungary and Slovakia, whose current leaders have the most loyal position among all Western countries towards Russia, also do not want to invite Ukraine.
Three other countries opposing the invitation to Kyiv are Belgium, Slovenia and Spain. According to a Politico source, these countries are “hiding in the shadows” for now, but will be ready to express their position more publicly if the idea gains momentum.
An official invitation to Ukraine to NATO before the end of the war is the first point of Volodymyr Zelensky's “victory plan”. The Ukrainian President noted that the entry into the alliance itself could take place after the end of hostilities.
The French newspaper Le Monde wrote on October 19 that the United States no longer has any fundamental objections to an official invitation to join the alliance. According to the publication's sources, President Joe Biden may begin to act in this direction during the transition period if his Democratic Party ally Kamala Harris wins the election.
