The President of Germany dissolved the Bundestag. Snap elections will be held on February 23

Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved the country's parliament (Bundestag) and scheduled snap parliamentary elections for February 23, 2025.
"In difficult times like now, a capable government and a reliable majority in parliament are needed to ensure stability," Deutsche Welle quotes him as saying.
The president of the country announced his intentions to dissolve parliament on December 20, the publication recalls. He said that "there are no longer any prospects for creating a stable parliamentary majority for the federal government."
On December 16, members of the Bundestag refused to trust the government of Olaf Scholz. During a special session convened at the initiative of Scholz himself, 207 out of 717 deputies expressed support for the cabinet, 116 abstained, and 394 voted against.
Scholz raised the question of confidence with the deputies after the collapse of the ruling coalition - this vote was necessary to have formal grounds for calling early elections. After the vote, Scholz approached German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier with a proposal to formally dissolve parliament. He had to do this within 21 days, after which new elections would be called.
Since 2021, a coalition has been in power in Germany, which included the Social Democratic Party (led by Scholz), the Greens, and the Free Democratic Party. In early November, amid serious disagreements within the coalition on economic reforms, the FDP left the coalition. Without it, the SPD and the Greens did not have a parliamentary majority.
