Why is New York City called the Big Apple?

Posted on Jul 27, 2025 / History

New York City earned the nickname The Big Apple in the 1920s, originally from horse racing slang.

Jockeys and trainers used it to refer to big-money races in NYC, calling them "the big apple" as a prize.

The term was later popularized by a 1970s tourism campaign, and today it symbolizes NYC's energy, opportunity, and cultural richness.
