Is Washington, D.C. safe for tourists?

Like any major city, D.C. has both safe and less safe areas. The central tourist zones — like the National Mall, Capitol Hill, and Georgetown — are generally safe, especially during the day. Crime rates have decreased in recent years, and there's a visible police presence in busy areas. As with any city, staying aware of your surroundings and avoiding poorly lit or isolated places at night is always a good idea.
