Why does D.C. have so many protests and rallies?

As the nation's capital, D.C. is the natural place for people to voice opinions on political and social issues. The First Amendment protects peaceful assembly, and the city sees thousands of demonstrations every year. From civil rights marches to climate protests, the city’s public spaces are often stages for change. It’s part of what gives D.C. its vibrant, democratic energy. Seeing a peaceful rally on the Mall is almost part of the local culture.
