Why was Washington, D.C. chosen as the capital?

The location was chosen as a compromise between Northern and Southern states after much political debate. George Washington selected the specific site along the Potomac River. The idea was to have a neutral capital, not part of any individual state. Its placement was meant to balance power and geographic accessibility. Over time, the city grew into a symbol of American democracy.
