El Paso has a long and rich history dating back thousands of years, originally inhabited by Native American groups like the Manso and Suma peoples. The Spanish arrived in the 1500s, and the area became an important part of New Spain. In the 1800s, it became part of Mexico, then the Republic of Texas, and finally the United States. The city's development took off in the late 19th century with the arrival of the railroad, and it became a center for trade, military, and ranching.
