What role did racial tension play in the history of Detroit?

Racial segregation, redlining, and inequality have played a major role in shaping Detroit’s past and present. The 1967 riots were a major turning point, exposing deep social and economic divides. Many white residents moved to the suburbs in the following years, leaving behind disinvestment and poverty in many parts of the city. Today, Detroit is over 75% African American, and addressing racial equity remains a major issue.
