Can ships of all sizes pass through the Suez Canal?

While the canal can handle many large vessels, there are size limits known as the “Suezmax” dimensions. These limits restrict the maximum width, draft, and length of ships allowed to ensure safe navigation. Very large vessels like some of the world’s biggest container ships and oil tankers are designed to fit within these limits. Ships that exceed Suezmax dimensions must take alternative routes. The canal authority continuously upgrades and expands the canal to accommodate larger ships as global shipping demands grow. Pilots and tugboats assist vessels during transit to ensure safe passage. Despite these restrictions, the canal remains accessible to a vast majority of commercial ships.
